Mahela Jayawardena(374) and Kumar Sangakkara(287) have recorded the highest partnership in Test Cricket by putting together 624 runs for the 3rd wicket in the 1st Test match against South Africa at SSC, Colombo. The previous record partnership 574 was held by Sanath Jayasuriya and Roshan Mahanama. It was a great moment for Sri Lankan Cricket. I personally had the opportunity to witness it. I hit the grounds during the 2nd session of play. Kumara Sangakkara unfornately got out for 287 trying to slash against fairly a wide delivery missing out on his 300.
After the dismissal of Sangakkara all eyes were focused on Mahela. He was on 309 at that time. The crowd were cheering for an every run he scored. Crackers started to burst and cheers by the crowd when he went passed 340, the highest Test Score by a Lankan which was scored by Sanath Jayasuriya. More crowd started to flow into the grounds expecting to see Mahela Breaking Brian Lara's 400 run record in Test Cricket. Unfortunately he got bowled to a delivery that pitched short and kept low when he was on 374. Andrew Nel was jubilant picking up the prize wicket. There was bit of a silence in the ground for few seconds then the big standing ovation by the crowd to the young Sri Lankan captain. He missed out on the record but he proved himself as one of the best batsman in the world of Test Cricket. Hats off to Mahela and hopefully we can see more records broken by this elegant batsman.
